Awakening Hope with the financial support from The Georgetown University decided to support a career counseling centre for rural students. The main purpose of the Centre is to provide guidance pertaining to higher education opportunities, vocational training, employment and self-employment opportunities to students in rural areas of Chaksu block of Jaipur district. After a year long discussions and visit of Mr. Amol Luhadia (a graduate from Georgetown University) to KIGS office in Jaipur in June, the project formally started in October 2004. |

This place is in the heart of the city and very close to the University of Rajasthan and various education institutions. The building is on lease for institutions working for the welfare of the general masses. |

| The Centre gives career counseling to students in rural areas of Chaksu block of Jaipur district. According to the initial plan we had to cover 20 schools (10 in the first phase and 10 in the second phase) (which include Secondary {class X} and Senior Higher Secondary schools {class XII}) for giving extensive career counseling. But when discussions were held with students, teachers, parents and villagers we had to change the strategy. They were of the opinion that the school students need long term career counseling while the school pass out students need urgent attention. As a result a two-tier plan was made - (a) long term counseling with school students and (b) short-term counseling and guidance to school passed out students. The following five schools are identified for long term career counseling: |

These schools are regularly being visited by the Counselor and all the information required by the students are given to them. A special career day was celebrated on January 12, 2005 to mark the occasion. The celebration increased the awareness about career planning among students, teachers and parents. In order to cater the needs of school drop out students five villages have also been identified to give detailed career counseling. The name of the villages is as follows. |

| Volunteers have been identified in these five villages. They are collecting the database of the students so that they are given counseling according to their qualifications. In the meantime Vocational Training Centers have been identified in Jaipur. They give training in various kinds of trade such as computer - hardware, software, Tally, DTP, etc, telephone/mobile/TV/deck/CD/VCD/DVD repairing, tailoring, photography and videography, household wiring, repair and maintenance of household electronic goods, electric motor rewinding, animal husbandry, organic farming, medicinal plantation, etc. Government department, private organizations, charitable trusts, etc run these training centres. Since Disha Kendra Project does not have funds to give vocational training we are trying to tie up with these organization to support us in training. Most of the students in our project area cannot afford the high costs of the vocational training. Initial discussions have been made with Khadi Vidhyalaya, Shivdaspura and RUDSETI, Jaipur to give training's to our students free or at a very low cost.About 100 students have been registered with us who needs vocational training in one trade or the other. They are being scrutinized and interviewed so that a proper training according to his qualification may be organized. We are planning that during the summer vocation we will try to conduct at least two trainings, which are in great demand. The details are being worked out. |
